As a member of the Asbury Park community, Jesse Kendle has worn many hats. He has been an educator with 27 years of experience, a politician, an activist, a friend and a good neighbor. His heart has always been, and still is, full of love for this city and the people who make this city their home.

After graduating APHS he attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha. While at UNO he began his activism by becoming part of a group of students known as the Omaha 54. This group of students nonviolently protested the lack of a Black Studies program at the University. The outcome of the protest produced studies leading to the establishment of a program that prevails even today. The Department of the Black Studies Program at UNO held their 50th anniversary in the 2021-2022 academic year by honoring the “Omaha 54” students with a Hall of Fame presentation & induction Ceremony. Jesse attended the celebration, was inducted and not only collected his medal of merit, but also that of his forever friend James Massey, who also graduated from APHS and was also a fellow “Omaha 54” recipient but is now deceased. Mr. Massey's award was given to his son, James Massey. Jr. who is the Director of Admissions at U.M. Jesse had the opportunity to speak with Malcom X & he studied the teachings of Martin Luther King. These two important people influenced him to speak up and speak out about what he believed in.

He returned to Asbury Park where he began his life by securing employment and raising a family. He began his career as a security guard, but after completing a few courses at Seton Hall he obtained his diploma from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He became a Health & Physical education instructor and was able to pursue his passion of coaching. Jesse has coached soccer, track, basketball and his favorite, football, He worked in the Asbury Park, Freehold, Red Bank & Monmouth Regional school systems

Jesse’s passion for community engagement led him to enter the field of local politics. He served 8 years as a member of the Asbury Park City Council. In that position he worked to support local economic growth and helped to create policies that would empower future generations. He also made a difference to the Asbury Park community by serving on the AP Recreation Committee, bringing several innovative events to the city, including amazing Fashion Shows, Game Night for Senior Citizens, Trunk or Treat and a barbeque for the special needs community.

Jesse has been married to his wife, Phalia, for 52 years and they are proud parents of: JoWandalyn, Joshua & Jarius and are called “Mimi” & “Pop Pop” by 8 magnificent grandchildren.

Jesse continues to make a difference to the Asbury Park community. He accepts this honor, "not for me, but for people who struggled and have come out "OK". He leads by example and says, "If I can do it, you can too".
