Dick graduated in 1969 after having received 9 varsity letters, 4 in soccer, 3 in baseball and 2 in basketball. He was a recipient of the distinguished Lion’s Club award for scholastic/athletic achievement. Upon graduation he became a member of one of the top ten soccer teams in the country at East Stroudsburg State College. In 1973 he received his B.A. degree in Health & Physical Education and was hired to teach at Manasquan High School.

Coaching had always been one of his passions and he was given the opportunity at Manasquan. At first he was an assistant track coach and then an assistant baseball coach. He then was given an opportunity to coach JV soccer which he did with both the girls and boys for over 20 years. Finally he was able to get the job of coaching Varsity girls’ basketball, which had only begun about 5 years prior. He continued coaching the girls for 25 years resulting in an stellar career. He finished with a total of 475 wins and 179 losses, a .726 winning percentage. His teams won back to back State Championships in 1987 and 1988. They were the overall Shore Conference Champions in 1981 and 1983. They accumulated 14 Division championships and were the only team in the shore conference to be awarded the Shore Conference Team Sportsmanship award in consecutive years. Dick was named the New York Daily News “Coach of the Year” in 1987 and the Asbury Park Press “Coach of the Year” in 1987 and 1988. In 2003 he was inducted into the New Jersey State Coach’s Hall of Fame and in 2010 he was inducted into the Manasquan Hall of Fame.

Dick’s other passion began in 1969 when he was hired as an ocean lifeguard in his hometown of Bradley Beach. Little did he know that this would evolve into a lifelong summer occupation for 55 years! Over those years he was involved in rescuing hundreds of bathers. In 1992 he was named Lifeguard/Beach Supervisor. For 32 years he supervised the safety of thousands of summer bathers. Also during this time he competed in local lifeguard competitions and numerous national tournaments where he won several age-group national titles.

He has been involved in many community activities which include being a lifetime member of the Bradley Beach First Aid and an active member of ANSWER, the local after hours water rescue team. Dick has been married for 53 years to the love of his life, Vickie, and they have a daughter Kristy and twin boys Matthew and Robert and 7 grandchildren.
